Is Vitiligo contagious?

There is a myth that Vitiligo is contagious, but the fact is vitiligo is not contagious. You cannot get it from touching, eating, or close contact.

Myth: Vitiligo is caused by eating milk and fish together.

Fact: There is no evidence that supports this. Although diet alone doesn’t cause vitiligo, some nutrients are important in keeping your skin healthy.

Myth: Vitiligo is a type of skin cancer.

Fact: Vitiligo is not cancer. It is an autoimmune condition that causes the depigmentation of skin and is not uncontrolled growth of cells.

Myth: Vitiligo only occurs in those with dark skin.

Fact: Vitiligo can occur in persons with any skin complexion. 

Myth: Vitiligo is because of poor hygiene.

Fact: Hygiene has nothing to do with vitiligo. Vitiligo is not caused by dirt, infection, or lack of cleanliness.

Myth: Vitiligo always runs in the family.

Fact: While it can be, there are many people with vitiligo who don’t have a family history and many people with a family history who don’t have it.

Myth: Vitiligo affects only skin.

Fact: Vitiligo affects hairs (eyelashes, eyebrows, hair on the scalp), eyes, and possibly even the inside of the mouth (mucous membranes).

Myth: People with vitiligo have mental or physical impairments.

Fact: Vitiligo has no effect on intelligence, physical capabilities, or mental abilities. It is simply a skin condition.

Myth: Vitiligo can be spread sexually.

Fact: This is completely false. There is no sexual transmission of vitiligo, and the condition is not in any way associated with sexual activity.

Myth: Stress is the primary cause of vitiligo.

Fact: Stress may or may not be a trigger; however, it is not primarily the cause of vitiligo. Vitiligo is thought to be caused by autoimmune, genetic, or environmental factors too.

Myth: Vitiligo turns the skin white due to an infection.

Fact: Vitiligo is in no way caused by an infection, and it is due to the defect of pigment-producing cells.

Myth: People with vitiligo should avoid marriage and procreation.

Fact: There should be no reason that someone with vitiligo does not marry or have children, as vitiligo does not impact fertility.

Myth: Vitiligo always spreads.

Fact: It could remain localised and be stable for years for people, while in other individuals it may, in fact, spread. Every case is different.

Myth: Vitiligo can be cured only with home remedies. 

The fact is vitiligo home remedies can help, but they don’t cure vitiligo. Medical treatment is usually necessary for visible improvement.

Is Vitiligo your past karma or sin?

This belief is completely based on superstition. Vitiligo is an illness, not a penalty or moral condemnation.

Is there any Permanent cure of vitiligo?

There is no such permanent cure for vitiligo yet. However, there are vitiligo treatments, like light therapy, and new medications, such as JAK inhibitors. If vitiligo is stable, surgery, such as skin grafts, is sometimes performed. These treatments can restore pigment and can give you some relief, but there is no permanent cure available as such.
