Skin Tag: Types and How to Identify Them?

Skin Tag: Types and How to Identify Them?

Skin tags are a type of small, soft, harmless skin growth that typically develops in areas of friction on your body. Skin tags often develop due to friction, hormonal changes, or ageing. While most skin tags are painless, they can bother you or affect the way you look. There are different types of skin tags, and knowing them is important in identifying them at early stages, knowing what treatments to pursue along with the skin tag removal cost.

Who can get skin tags?

Individuals of all age groups, especially adults, can get skin tags. Skin tags on neck are very common among Indians due to saree necklines, tight collars, or body folds creating friction.

Types of Skin Tags

Skin tags are sometimes categorised based on their size, texture, and position on hair follicles. While they are all benign, distinguishing skin tags may influence the choice of skin tag treatment.

Skin Tag Types and How to Identify Them

Common Skin Tag Types

a) Acrochordon:

  • This is the most common
  • Small, soft, and skin-coloured
  • Usually occurs in folds, like the neck, underarms, or eyelids.
  • Not painful—but can sometimes become irritated by jewellery or clothing.

b) Fibroepithelial polyps:

  • Larger and fleshier than acrochordons.
  • They are attached to the skin by a thin stalk (pedunculated).
  • They can grow a few centimetres.
  • Commonly come up in the groin, thigh, or armpit area.

c) Papilloma:

  • Similar in appearance to warts, tend to have a slightly rough texture
  • Sometimes associated with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, but more commonly due to friction.
  • Are generally small in size and persist in high-friction areas

d) Other Varieties:

  • I.e., soft fibromas: soft, movable growths that sometimes appear in groups
  • Neurofibromas: rare, deep lesions associated with genetic abnormalities.
  • Seborrhoeic keratosis: sometimes mistaken for skin tags but has a waxy or scaled texture.

Identifying Skin Tag Types

  • Size: Ranges from only a few millimetres in size to a couple of centimetres.
  • Texture: Smooth, slightly wrinkled, soft.
  • Colour: Usually they are of skin colour, but some darken over time.
  • Use attachment to differentiate: Can be sessile (broad base) or pedunculated (on a stalk).

How to Differentiate Tags from Other Growths: Skin tags can look like moles, warts, or benign tumours; however, warts will be rougher and thicker, and moles will usually present with more pigment. A simple visual inspection is often enough, but it is best to follow up with a dermatologist to know for sure.

When to Consult a doctor

When to Consult a doctor

Skin tags are usually harmless, but consider looking to a dermatologist if you notice:

  • Your skin tag changing in size, shape, or colour.
  • If it is bleeding or becomes painful.
  • If you notice rapid growth or many new skin tags, consult immediately.
  • If a skin tag is causing discomfort or affecting your appearance.

If you see your skin tag symptoms getting worse, consult a dermatologist near you or visit Reborn Skin and Hair Clinic for the best skin tag removal treatment. No matter what the reason for skin tags, we have treated them all.

Treatment options available:

  • Cryotherapy: freezing off the skin tag with liquid nitrogen.
  • Cauterisation: burning off the skin tag using fire or electric current.
  • Excision: cutting off the skin tag with surgical scissors.
  • Laser Removal: laser is a cosmetic option that is quick, exact, and painless!

All these skin tag removal options are safe at our Reborn Skin clinic. The cost of each of these techniques varies, but they are affordable when compared to suffering long-term with a skin tag!
