Your dermatologist examines the mole with a dermatoscope, a hand-held magnifier. We check the ABCDE signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, uneven Colour, Diameter over 6 mm and any Evolving change. We ask how long the mole has been there and whether it itches, bleeds or has grown. Then we pick the right method and explain the healing and the likely mark.
If a mole looks unusual, we remove it by excision and send it to the lab for a biopsy. Results take about a week. For moles that look safe, we clean the skin, mark the spot and apply numbing cream for 20 to 30 minutes. A tiny local anaesthetic injection is used for excision.
Laser mole removal: a focused laser beam breaks down the pigment and the raised tissue layer by layer. Flat and small moles on the face respond well to laser. A mole is a small cluster of pigment cells in the skin. It can be flat or raised, and brown, black or skin-coloured. Most moles form in childhood and the teenage years because of genes. Sun exposure, pregnancy hormones and age can bring new moles or darken old ones. Most moles are harmless, but a changing mole should always be checked by a dermatologist.
Most moles are removed in one session. Laser, radiofrequency and surgical excision all clear a small to medium mole in a single visit of 15 to 30 minutes. Very deep or large moles, or flat moles with deep pigment, may need a second sitting after 4 to 6 weeks. Several moles can often be treated in the same appointment.
Mole removal is very comfortable. Numbing cream is applied for 20 to 30 minutes before laser or radiofrequency, so you feel only mild warmth or pressure. For surgical excision, a tiny local anaesthetic injection numbs the area fully, with a small pinch at first.
